Present to Give Husband at Birth of Baby

Why give nascence in Mexico? For me, information technology was a no-brainer for various reasons I described in a separate post. Most chiefly, I think the best gift i can effortlessly give a child is to get the baby second citizenship at birth.

I spent a few years living in Mexico City, so few years in Playa del Carmen. During my time in Mexico City all my friends and community were Mexican and not expat crowd at all, which means I got to know how things actually worked.

I got to visit a few friends at various hospitals so I knew the quality of healthcare and I also worked on medical & legal enquiry few years dorsum.

While at that place's a big difference between private and public care, for foreigners without a valid residency there's only an pick of individual care which is extremely affordable if you have an income from outside of Mexico.

Hence why and then many Americans do medical tourism – if you lot go to Tijuana or any other spot right next to the edge you'll notice there are hospitals and pharmacies defended to those who just cross the edge to get a medical handling done (plastic surgeries being the most popular actually). I did it with my psoriasis really.

Nascency tourism in United mexican states is also slowly getting more attention. Especially since Mexican clearing is groovy on 180 days visas and wants people to get proper residency.

UPDATE 2022: Giving nascence in Mexico got so pop that many birthing agencies popped up – there are quite a few. They're for those who desire to get some help when information technology comes to paperwork, arranging doctors and hospitals.

Y'all don't NEED the birthing bureau. The procedure is pretty straightforward: you only call the hospital and prepare a visit with obgyn you lot pick. There'due south e'er someone who speaks English language. You can too only get someone to go with yous to register the baby – finding anyone who speaks English language and can translate for you cannot be easier in popular towns like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City, or Tijuana.

While the agency can make things easier and I'm sure at that place are plenty of good ones I keep getting emails from people who used birthing agents and end upwardly with surprise costs and overpaying double for everything, and so until I find someone I tin recommend I'll say: do everything on your ain – I just added all the steps on how to do things.

Choosing a Infirmary for Nascence in Mexico

There were a few hospitals I considered, only ultimately I decided that instead of going back to United mexican states Metropolis I'd rather spend a few weeks on the embankment in Playa del Carmen as I used to live there before and give birth in Cancun at Hospital Galenia.

In that location's a belief that Mexican hospitals button many women to accept a cesarian nativity even if natural nativity is possible, and while I cannot speak for all public hospitals as all local friends opted for private options likewise, I can certainly tell you that it's not the instance with private hospitals.

In fact, I tin tell yous that it's surely non truthful with Galenia in Cancun, considering I was able to see the nascency registry and it was definitely more natural vaginal births. Considering that my dr. specialized in high-risk pregnancies in which c-sections are required more often I'd say it looked pretty good.

In United mexican states you can have a vaginal birth, water nascency (parto en el agua) or cesarian depending on the preference and naturally medical circumstances. I also know some people who even had a doula for a dwelling birth (parto en casa) – in fact, it's getting more and more pop.

Step 1: Recommendations for Hospital from First-Hand Experiences:

  • Cancun
    • Hospital Galenia (doctors Eduardo Loya or Alejandra Macías)
    • Amerimed Hospital
  • Mexico City
    • ABC Hospital (doc Annie Kuttothara)
    • Hospital Angeles Interlomas
  • Playa del Carmen: Salud Central
    • Salud Primal (birthing eye)
    • Ixchel Hospital (doctor Ivan Kowasky)
  • Playa del Carmen: Salud Primal (if y'all want birthing heart)
    • Mexico City: ABC Hospital (dr. Annie Kuttothara)
  • Puerto Vallarta: La Joya Hospital

Selection a infirmary and doctor, call for an appointment. Arrive, take an appointment, and set up your hospital birth registration forth with a bout. Y'all should receive a brochure with costs and be informed about additional extra costs during the process.

My Experience Giving Birth in Mexico

Prenatal Care in United mexican states

We made a decision of going to Mexico at 34 weeks which yet seemed early after terminal time. If it wasn't for covid and potential bug caused by it I'd prob just booked an appointment for and then, just I wanted to be sure that nosotros're all set before moving back to Mexico for a few months.

That said, I called the hospital and arranged an appointment around 28 weeks. I had a few doctors to pick from and based on several recommendations I decided on dr. Eduardo Loya.

I was positively surprised at the first date when the medico took an hour to get all my history, explained everything, took time to see if everything is ok for the ultrasound, and discuss options for the birth. The same appointments in the The states have almost ten minutes.

I had another appointment at 36 weeks when nosotros arrived back in Mexico and we scheduled the birth then, every bit at this point it was pretty much certain I would need some other c-section (I had placenta previa. and we waited till the last minute to see if something improves).

I really liked that my doctor was flexible and while we had a engagement, information technology was subject to a potential change. I had follow-up appointments every calendar week (free of charge) and detailed ultrasounds each week. Nosotros decided that if I can brand it to almost 38 weeks it makes no sense to take the baby out before.

My doctor was always reachable on WhatsApp any time of the day in case I needed something. This applies to post-nascence as well.

My hospital room

Infirmary Experience – Hospital Galenia in Cancun

I was scheduled for Friday at 8 AM and because we lived about an hour away from the infirmary it was amend for me to bank check in the night before. This was something I was offered at no extra charge, similar to my weekly appointments.

Step 2: Documents needed to cheque-in at the infirmary:

  • medical approval from your local doc (kind of obvious)
  • proof of payment or deposit (because information technology's a private hospital)
  • proof of accost – it can be a neb under someone else's name if you're not a permanent resident or renting
  • your passport copy or FM2/FM3 (if you're a resident)

There's no need for me to share my entire birth story – all I will say is that a 2d c-department is definitely non a walk in the park, only all complications have been taken intendance of.

One thing I do want to say is that they have protocols for everything including going to the bathroom the next solar day, so if you need or desire something – keep insisting on it.

I discussed everything with my doctor beforehand, including the type of incision closure. My anesthesiologist was nifty and made me feel very comfortable during the unabridged process.

My married man was naturally allowed in the operating room, but after debating it for a while we decided that both he and our older son Dylan volition come to the hospital after the baby Holden is born and anybody is out of recovery rooms.

I was allowed to accept a phone with me during my c-department and in recovery since my husband couldn't be in that location. They took nice photos for me in the operating room and with a fresh babe too.

We had to ask for special permission to bring Dylan to the hospital since kids are currently not allowed due to covid.

I cannot speak nigh the language barrier since I'm fluent in Spanish, merely I can say that not all nurses speak English language for sure. Even so, there'south always someone available for a possible translation if needed.

My doctor was fluent in English, so was the anesthesiologist, and they both spoke English to my husband who doesn't actually speak Spanish autonomously from basics.

That's me down there 😀

Step iii: Documents from the Hospital & Payments – Pay Attending!

Unlike in the US (I dare to say US is the only country that registers baby at the hospital), in Mexico simply like in Europe babies aren't registered at the hospital. The infirmary fills out a course in Spanish with information about the mother.

In my case, information technology's been done before nascency considering nosotros had time, but I assume if you're in active labor they'll do information technology after.

So, right earlier the discharge, you receive a class provided by the hospital that you must "sign" past doing a fingerprint. They too requite yous a kid's hospital grade chosen "nacido vivo" or "certificado de alumbramiento" with infant'south footprints and handprints that they accept after nativity when they take him for a check-up.

You too need to settle the payments before you leave which is pretty normal everywhere at a private infirmary. In Mexico, however, information technology was an experience itself…

In Poland, with my firstborn, I was able to simply transport my hubby to the office and pay for everything with a credit bill of fare, so we assumed (wrongly) that it could work the same style.

I decided to become instead of my husband as I spoke Spanish and idea it was going to exist easier as nosotros already pre-paid for some things in accelerate. The affair is, because of the protocol, you cannot "just go", and so first they had to phone call a guy to take me with a wheelchair to the cashier.

This is where the fun started because it turned out I tin can just pay the hospital fee, but then every md'south salary has to be paid to the doctor direct. Because my OBGYN was the manager of the infirmary I was able to pay his bacon there, only then there was a question how do I pay for the neonatologist and anesthesiologist.

We had to ask nurses to communicate with both doctors to come and tell me how they want to get paid. Keep in heed that it was Sunday morning.

The anesthesiologist was pretty easy, because they called him in and he came very before long after and said that greenbacks is fine, and so my married man went to the ATM downstairs and took the greenbacks out. The neonatologist, still, was working at a different infirmary so we had to look until he finishes a birth at another hospital and comes over.

Once he came over he said he can exercise a bank transfer, but Transferwise had some issues and required information that none of us had and then that was no-become. The limit of daily withdrawal on our card also concluded, so we had to agree that we bring the money when the baby comes for a check-up.

Then we got another notation from the cashier that our pecker was all prepare and nosotros could get officially discharged.

Toll of Giving Nativity in Mexico

Everything came downwards to about $2200. If it was a natural birth then information technology would be cheaper, just we also got some extra tests for the baby (nosotros asked for information technology) and I needed more than drugs (also asked for it) and my doctor was the most expensive at the hospital (which I knew), so it could take been less.

My hospital was besides the most expensive in the area.

You lot should be informed near all the costs beforehand. Doctors' salaries vary per md, just you lot tin can ask them beforehand to be prepared.

Postnatal Intendance in Mexico

Unlike in the Us when you lot have a follow-upward appointment at 6 weeks, in Mexico both yous and the baby have a follow-up 7-8 days after birth. Then you lot take another appointment at 3 weeks.

It'south very helpful and you tin exist taken care of nicely. I was able able to message my medico and ask him whatsoever questions on WhatsApp.

I actually had some complications and needed extra medications, and fifty-fifty though my doctor wasn't working that day he arranged for someone else to requite me the prescription and then I could outset taking it as before long as possible.

How to Register a Nascence in Mexico

Step four: How to Get a Mexican Birth Certificate for a Baby

To register the baby and obtain the nascency certificate you need to go to the civil registry (registro civil). You don't Need to go immediately after (in Poland you have a 2-week period), but I read some horror stories from foreigners having bug with getting baby'south birth certificates that I wanted to go asap.

I was worried for no reason because obtaining a baby's birth document was very easy. What yous normally need is:

  • for from the hospital (discharge paper + certificado de alumbramiento / nacido vivo)
  • IDs of both parents, and so in our case passports
  • Nativity certificates of both parents (more on this beneath)
  • Proof of address (again, doesn't need to be under your name)
  • ID of 2 witnesses and witnesses (because it was during covid no witnesses were required)
  • copies of all the documents – you can practice it at the registry

Of import: both parents and the baby have to be present to submit the documents and option them upwards.

At present, in reality, the listing of required documents is longer and also includes things like marriage certificates, divorce certificates and and then on, merely when we went and asked, we were told it'south not really needed.

One trouble we encountered was that we needed official translations and apostilles on our birth certificates, even though my own nativity certificate is an EU ane and has all the translations. Officially.

However, the guy looked at it and told me that he can just take all the data from our passports without using birth certificates, but he won't exist able to put all grandparents' information on it (not that it matters for annihilation).

The simply thing they weren't able to practice was to requite the baby my last proper noun. In Mexico and other Latin American countries, you lot normally take 2 last names – one paternal and one maternal (mother's maiden concluding name). Since I had merely my "new" last name in my passport the baby had to exist named Holden James Karsten Karsten.

We were also told it would take a week to become it, but I was told to come dorsum in two days.

ii days subsequently we had an appointment to pick upwards infant'south nascency certificate and his CURP (it's like Mexican social security number). We went into a private room where we had to look at it and see if everything is correct and then the baby had to sign the document. Which ways he had to give a fingerprint 😉

Holden signing his nascence document

You volition get two nascency certificates – a "long ane" and "curt i". The longer one is called "copia fiel del libro" and that's the important ane.

Get copies of birth certificates, because some consulates ask for the official ones. In some places in Mexico you lot tin can just practice it at the "kiosko", but in Quintana Roo I had to gild them direct from the ceremonious registry.

You lot exercise NOT need the apostille of Mexican birth certificates for European or American documents. They might tell you at the registry that you exercise, but you don't as Eu no longer requires it and American Embassy takes it all. Apostille takes nigh fourteen days and costs well-nigh 2000 MXN.

Vaccination Card for the Baby

Vaccinations are mandatory in Mexico, and so the baby needs to have a vaccination menu. If you lot're only giving nascency and leaving not wanting a residency for yourself so y'all don't demand a vaccination card, but if yous practise that'due south something you need to go every bit it's needed for family residency.

Vaccination cards are given at IMSS (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social) which is like social security for medical things. Nonetheless, since you won't have medical insurance as a non-resident you cannot exist given anything there, even though your baby is Mexican.

Only Infirmary General in the city you're staying tin upshot a vaccination card for your infant and they can also vaccinate your baby free of accuse, regardless of whether you take insurance or not.

If yous wish, you can also continue with your individual pediatrician and do vaccines there, but a private physician cannot issue a vaccination bill of fare.

There's an exemption to the vaccination card requirement for obtaining permanent residency based. on the baby: baby's Mexican Passport. If you have a Mexcian passport for your baby already then y'all don't need to prove the vaccination bill of fare at the INM.

Mexican Vaccination Booklet

Step 5: Mexican Passport & Leaving the State

Under normal circumstances, you lot tin hands get a child a Mexican passport before you get out the country and pretty much straight abroad. For usa, it was a flake different because of covid restrictions so I can tell you about both options and important things to add together.

In order to go a Mexican infant (your babe is automatically a Mexican as he/she is born in Mexico) a Mexican passport y'all some documents that you might non demand in your country.

Officially, as in every other place in the earth, if you're a citizen of a country yous must leave and enter the country using this land's document. So for example, if you're an American and Mexican yous must leave Mexico using Mexican documents and enter the Us using your American documents.

Some people are using loopholes if their kids have expired passports or they were built-in elsewhere, just in United mexican states or the Usa (or other countries with birthright) if in any passport it says "born in that country" there'due south no way around it every bit the citizenship is automatic.

That said, your baby must leave on a Mexican passport officially. I'm saying officially considering more on this beneath.

Obtaining a Mexican passport in Mexico for a baby is super like shooting fish in a barrel and the passport is issued the aforementioned day. For Quintana Roo you can usually do it in Cancun. Documents you need:

  • infant's photo
  • parent's IDs (passports or residency carte)
  • copy of infant's nascency certificate
  • carta de pediatra

What'due south carta de pediatra? In Mexico a babe needs a certificate with a photograph to obtain a passport. Basically, you need to enquire your pediatrician to issue you a certificate with infant'south stats and stamp over a photo along with a copy of your doctor's medical diploma.

Any pediatrician can do that and they know what to do and what'south it for, so don't worry. The merely thing you need to know is to schedule your passport appointment before going to get it at the pediatrician because this document is just valid for xxx days.

Carta de pediatra

At present, because of covid there were admittedly no appointments available for months at the passport part. I fifty-fifty tried through people I knew who worked there and had no luck.

Nevertheless, there were appointments at the Mexican Embassy in Common salt Lake City, then I scheduled ane but we however had to go out United mexican states and didn't know whether we'll be able to without his passport.

I was getting different data from dissimilar sources every fourth dimension I enquired. Official information on the website said that the babe won't be able to exit Mexico without Mexican passport.

I then chosen the Embassy who told me that nosotros should exist able to leave as long as we have baby's nascency certificate.

I also asked two lawyers and one told me that at that place's a fine at the aerodrome for that and some other told me that information technology depends on the officeholder and I might need to pass some money to them.

Needless to say, we decided to just come across what happens and naught happened every bit nosotros went to the airport with but his American passport (because naturally, baby needs A passport to travel). I gave the nascence certificate at the cheque-in counter and they handed me a class for Mexican citizens leaving for the baby explaining we had no passport nonetheless considering of covid.

Then I handed this form to the immigration with no questions asked. No issues, no fine, no bribe. Goose egg.

Farewell for now!

Now, if for any reason y'all determine to get a baby's Mexican passport outside of Mexico you still need carta de pediatra, fifty-fifty though officially it says you don't need it.

We were asked for baby's photograph ID and that was naturally the merely photograph ID we had then it worked. We wouldn't have been able to get it without information technology.

Some other thing to notation is that if y'all're getting a Mexican passport at the consulate you lot don't bring a photograph with you, they have it at the consulate which was a big issue with a baby. Long story short it took 3 kind people, lots of assistance, a white poster on the floor in the middle of the busy consulate, and endless tries. And a ridiculously funny photo in Holden's passport 😉

Step 6: Other Citizenships & Passports

Many people kept asking us questions if the baby is going to be American when it'south built-in abroad. Yep, both of my kids are American at nascence and none were born on the US soil.

The The states has a jus soli and jus sanguini rule (all countries that accept jus soli also have jus sanguini actually). In that location are certain requirements that y'all need to meet and collect some paperwork, but it'due south not difficult nor costly. We've washed it twice now.

As this is a common question, I actually wrote a separate post on how to get an American passport for a baby built-in away.

For Mexico specifically, if yous're in Mexico City that's easy considering the consulate is in Mexico Urban center and y'all can even asking CRBA online.

For Quintana Roo state information technology was a bit dissimilar because while at that place is a U.s.a. consulate in Cancun and they can effect you an American passport, they cannot issue yous a CRBA. This tin simply be done in Merida.

We had to go to Merida to get information technology which wasn't a problem for us because we made a trip out of it.

For those wondering how you tin can do this if your baby needs to be airlifted to the US from NICU, every bit you lot have to bring a baby with yous to the consulate, in that location are exceptions.

In fact, one family unit I saw did it correct before u.s.a. without the baby for this verbal reason – the baby had to stay at the hospital. Nobody is going to ask you lot to take a chance the baby's life if information technology's medically not advised to practice and then.

What about other passports? Mexico allows multiple citizenships, making your kid eligible for Mexican citizenship equally well every bit your country of citizenship. In our instance, all our countries allow multiple and so infant Holden will accept 4 citizenships.

Yet, you need to check whether your land allows information technology and if then, nether which circumstances (sometimes it's dissimilar at birth and when acquired).

Step 7: Getting a Permanent Residency in Mexico Based on Having a Baby

If yous want to stay in Mexico or continue coming back and somewhen become a Mexican citizen you lot might want to start thinking of getting your own permanent residency in Mexico. Thanks to your baby, the process is easy and you don't need proof of earning or annihilation.

You can do it anytime for the babe's parents and siblings, but I recommend doing it at to the lowest degree before the siblings plough 18 because and then they tin can skip the whole citizenship test when they become Mexican citizens.

I'll be writing a dissever mail on that in the next few months equally I simply got around to doing information technology at present and had to wait for an appointment – stay tuned!
